Nostr Links and Tips
In the coming weeks, it’ll be a year since I started using Nostr. It’s been a journey with its fair share of challenges. I’m not here to tell you how to solve everything, but there’s a lot to gain if you’re willing to embrace its quirks.
Clients:
Tools:
- Nostr.how: A comprehensive guide to Nostr.
- Follows: Helps restore your following list if it gets wiped—something that can happen.
- NostrSync: Backup tool that also helps broadcast your messages further than your usual relays.
- Metadata: A robust backup tool that lets you manage your profile.
- Nos2x: A signer extension for Chromium-based browsers (Google Chrome, Brave).
- Nos2x-fox: A signer extension for Firefox.
- Badges: A fun tool for managing badges.
- Nosey: A search tool for Nostr.
- Advanced Nostr Search: Another search option.
- Nostr.watch: Find relays and check their details.
- Lists: A tool for managing personalized feeds, though compatibility varies by client. I use it with Nostrudel.
- Japanese Nostr Links
Tips:
- Backup Smart: Use multiple tools for backups. I typically rely on both NostrSync and Metadata, trusting just one isn’t wise. I learned this the hard way when NostrSync failed me.
- Secure Your Keys: Always use a plugin for your nsec, and avoid storing it in plain text files. Consider backing it up in an offline password manager like KeePass.
- Get a NIP05: This gives you a nice label for your npub, allowing you to share profiles like
iris.to/username@domain.com
(e.g.,iris.to/makano@wolfgirl.cafe
) instead of a long npub string. - Stay Vigilant: There’s no mod team or support, so you’re in charge of your own security and feed quality. Use lists and the mute button to manage interactions. The report button isn’t very effective since people can still engage with you on other relays.
- Message Issues: Nostr messages can be tricky. they sometimes don’t sync properly. While messages are private, it’s possible to see who’s talking to whom.
- Use Multiple Relays: Aim for at least 10. Paid relays can be pricey and might not be worth it, but trying a few budget-friendly ones like YEHGRO is a smart move.
- Support Developers: If you can, consider donating some sats to developers and relay owners.
